Our bodies are incredible vessels that allow us to move through life and all the other experiences it has to offer. But when we live in a society that is always talking about the latest diet or ideal body type, it can be easy to lose perspective. However, one of the most fundamental things in life is having a good relationship and respect for your body, the very thing that carries you through life.
So how do we start this?
1. The first step is identifying the cause of an unhealthy body image. This may be the result of low self-esteem, comparing yourself to others, listening to negative comments, or unresolved pain and judgment in your past or present. Pinpoint what is contributing to your poor body image and recognize that it is not your body itself that is the issue, but the allowing whether conscious or unconscious, of external or internal pressures.
2. Surround yourself with a strong support system, whether that be friends, family, coach, or a trusted therapist. If you’re experiencing loved ones making negative comments about your appearance, it’s important to have an honest, open conversation about how their comments impact you and set clear boundaries for how you want to be treated. If despite this, someone in your life is continuing to put you down, it may be time to reconsider the space they hold in your life.
3. The final step is to practice love and acceptance towards your body. Remember everything your body is capable of and start appreciating the little things about it every day.
Your body allows you to be in the presence of those you love and those who love you. It enables you to experience new places and build meaningful memories, and it permits you to learn new lessons and seek valuable knowledge. Do things that put you in touch with your body and help you appreciate its capabilities whether that’s you making a list of things you appreciate about your body, surrounding yourself with people who lift you up or practicing gratitude. And finally, remember that true value can only come from within because unlike external appearances which change over time, who you are inside is lifelong.
