Many experience weight gain over Christmas to New Year, feeling guilty and bad about themselves. They start the new year with self-shame. The setup for thinking that you need to "make up for" that bite of stuffing or sip of nog, can cause you to fall victim to the predatory diet industry and attempt to starve yourselves from beginning of January. They set their new resolution in guilt and end up failing by mid-February. Because of this most suffer around Christmas, they believe that their only options are complete over-indulgence and weight gain or absolute anxiety and control.
Strategically when you approach the festive season in this mind set, you will certainly gain weight. Most studies show the average American gains at least 5 pounds during the period from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day. This is true in other parts of the world who celebrates this season as well. One problem with having a diet mentality around the holidays (or really, anytime) is that it makes you overthink what you're eating, taking away the pure enjoyment of these once-a-year treats.
Christmas should be a time where you can relax and enjoy celebrating with food and drink without guilt or anxiety about your weight or your diet. We should be looking forward to joy and love and excitement, not dreading excess calories and weight gain.
Restricting calories and beating yourself up in the gym triggers the body fight-or-flight response and highjacks the hormones that control our hunger and metabolism. There is so much more to weight loss than counting calories and moving your body more.
